Scotland Veteran Calls Time on International Career

New 'Hibs' signing David Marshall has today announced that he has retired from international football.

The 37 Year Old was his nation's hero in Serbia, saving Mitrovic's penalty and subsequently sending his country to their first major tournament in decades, ending 20 years of hurt.

Marshall then played all 3 games at last summer's European Championships but was unable to prevent Steve Clarke's side from crashing out at the group stage, with just a single point to their name.

David Marshall has been in and out of the squad ever since, with injuries, a lack of playing time at club level, and the remarkable form of Craig Gordon all shutting him out of the side. His last appearance for his country was the 3-1 defeat to Croatia.

Marshall said his desicion was made to allow the future generation of Scotland Goalkeepers to gain some experience.

David Marshall said: “I have thought long and hard about it since the disappointment of losing to Ukraine,

“I love playing for my country and the experience of helping the team to a major tournament has been the highlight of my career.

“I have memories of playing for Scotland that will last a lifetime but I also know what it is like as a young goalkeeper to have the opportunity. That was the overriding factor in my decision: Liam and Zander have been involved in recent squads for a while now and it is important that they can benefit from the experience of supporting Craig as No.1.

“The more I thought about it since the weekend, the more I was convinced it was the right thing to do before we start the Nations League campaign.

“My team-mates, the coaching staff and the backroom team all know how much I think of them, and I wish them all the best of luck for the coming games and in the campaigns ahead.

Marshall's international career spanned close to 18 years, playing his first game for his country back in August 2004 against Hungary. He went on to be capped 47 times for the tartan army, with the peak of that undoubtedly being that night in Serbia.

Marshall's retirement now means that the Scotland goalkeeping options for the upcoming nations league ties will be, Craig Gordon, Zander Clark and Liam Kelly.
